Can Fresh Graduates Really Start a Career as a DevOps Engineer?

I just graduated from college and have started learning DevOps, but I've been hearing from a lot of people that freshers like me won't get hired because companies prefer to hire experienced professionals. Is that true? I'm specifically looking to work for Dutch companies, and I've already tried web development and cybersecurity, but DevOps is my main interest now. Is there any way for a complete novice to land a job in this field? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Definitely possible! I got hired straight out of college into a DevOps team, but it really varies by company. In my role, I mostly worked on CI/CD processes initially, so you might start with tasks that are less critical to operations until you gain more skills. Don't be discouraged; just keep applying!

Absolutely, I made the jump into a Junior DevOps role about 10 months ago, even though my background was mostly in sysadmin. It hasn’t been easy, and I feel like I’m constantly learning on the job. In my experience, you really benefit from being in a supportive environment with good mentoring, which many companies lack. Just be prepared for the challenges ahead and ideally do some self-study to get a head start.

It can be tough for freshers to break into DevOps since many companies are looking for experienced candidates. However, it’s not impossible! Some companies might be willing to hire entry-level candidates and provide training, but it's important to have a solid foundation in related areas like coding or system administration. You might also want to focus on companies that have structured training programs for newbies.

Sure, some organizations might take on freshers if they’re set up to train them. But it’s rare! Most companies expect you to have some prior experience or a solid understanding of DevOps principles. It might be worth looking for internships or smaller companies that can offer you that entry point.
