I'm experiencing a frustrating issue with my iMac. Every morning when I start it up, I enter my password at the login prompt, and then the screen goes black. After hearing a startup chime, I have to log in again. I've contacted support multiple times, but their suggestions haven't solved the problem. One technician even said this behavior is normal, while another suggested my user account might be corrupted. I'm fed up with phone support and would like to know if I can just take my iMac directly to an Apple Store for someone to look at it and fix this issue. Is that possible?

One thing to consider is whether you’ve turned off FileVault. That can sometimes resolve startup issues, though it’s not the go-to fix for every problem.
Phone support can have difficulty understanding the issues as described. From what you’ve mentioned, the behavior might seem typical for a setup with a firmware password. When you visit the store, they can actually see what’s happening and understand your problem more clearly.
Does the video I recorded not provide any help for diagnosing this?
If you haven't done it yet, I recommend reinstalling the OS from recovery mode. If you take it to the store, they’ll probably do a clean install and check if the issue persists. This is the way they often start troubleshooting, and it could help isolate the problem without anything else interfering. It's also a good idea to clear out any login items or boot into safe mode to see if that helps.
That's the process they follow, so if you're okay with backing up your data and reinstalling the OS, it can potentially save you a trip to the store.
The second support person thought my user account was corrupted, so would reinstalling not fix that?
Absolutely, making an appointment is the way to go—it’s no different from bringing any other Apple product in for service.
Thanks for that!
Make sure to back up your important files. I would suggest a restore or a reinstall, but be aware that there’s some risk of data loss involved. That said, if you're not worried about it since you keep most data externally, you can go ahead.
I'm not too concerned about data loss since I keep my important stuff on an external drive. The second support guy thinks it’s a corrupt user account though. Any thoughts on that?
Yes, you can definitely bring your iMac into the store for repairs. It’s best to make an appointment beforehand, but you could also try walking in, though that might involve waiting. They’ll take a look at the problem, but the fix will depend on what they find.
I was hoping to clarify the issue when I get there. Thanks for confirming!

Could you explain a bit about why that would help?
