Can I Build a Career Focused Solely on Back-End Development?

I've been exploring my interests in coding and initially thought I liked front-end development. However, I've come to realize that I really dislike it, particularly when it comes to CSS. I enjoy back-end work much more because it involves logical problem-solving rather than the design aspects of front-end development. During my internship in design, it became clear that I'm not cut out for front-end work.

I'm wondering if I can focus exclusively on back-end technologies like Python/Django, PHP/Laravel, JavaScript/TypeScript/Node/Deno, MySQL, and MongoDB. Is it feasible to work as a back-end developer developing microservices and APIs without getting involved in front-end tasks?

Not only can you focus on back-end, it’s often encouraged to have that specialization rather than being a jack of all trades. Though as a front-end developer, I’ve written barely any CSS myself this past year!

So you're mostly using frameworks like React and Vue instead of dealing with CSS?

You can specialize in back-end, especially in larger companies where they value expertise in specific areas. Startups usually need everyone to wear multiple hats, though.

Is CSS really a requirement for front-end work, or can I get by focusing more on React?

I can relate! Front-end work drains me quickly, but back-end tasks keep me energized. It's great to see more jobs focusing on back-end roles these days.

Exactly! I love working with data and APIs, and the whole CSS thing just isn’t for me.

Yes, you definitely can! I've been doing back-end development for 28 years, and it's been a fulfilling journey.

Wow, 28 years in back-end? That's impressive!

It's totally possible, but just keep in mind that it might limit your job opportunities compared to being a full-stack developer. However, I still see plenty of back-end only roles out there, so you should be alright!

I prefer back-end too, but I hope to find a place that lets me avoid CSS as much as possible.
