I've got a Ryzen 7 5800X sitting around and I'm considering building an AM4 system this weekend. I'm curious if this CPU will run Linux smoothly, and if the age of the hardware might restrict my options for which distro to use.

You shouldn't have any issues with older hardware. The 5800X isn't too old, and it will handle just about any distro out there without a hitch.
The Ryzen 7 5800X is still a great processor, so unless you're doing heavy tasks like 4K video encoding or running multiple demanding applications at once, any Linux distro should run perfectly fine on it.
There are plenty of resources if you need help getting started! Just remember to take backups regularly and maybe test things out in a VM before diving in. Also, make sure you're familiar with commands before hitting Enter!
Good advice! Do you have any recommendations for a budget-friendly motherboard to pair with the 5800X?
