I'm trying to use my Android phone as a wired internet hotspot instead of relying on Wi-Fi. Is it possible to connect my phone directly to an Ethernet cable and share the internet that way? I want to know if there are any steps I need to follow to make this happen and any hardware I might need.

Honestly, just get a router! Your phone will only allow one device connection at a time anyway, so a dedicated router might save you a lot of hassle.
If you have an Asus router, it might be super easy! Just plug your phone into the router’s USB port and enable USB tethering on your phone. This way, other devices can connect through Ethernet to the router and use your phone’s internet.
To use your phone with Ethernet, head to the network settings on your phone, find hotspot and tethering options, and see if Ethernet tethering is available at the bottom. Just a heads-up though, you'll need an Ethernet to USB adapter to make it work. If that's too complicated, using USB tethering with a good quality cable can also be a solid option.
You can connect your phone to your PC using a regular USB cable. However, keep in mind that if you're looking for lower latency, it might not help much since the mobile connection itself usually contributes more to ping than the Wi-Fi signal does.
