I recently experienced a robbery and lost my phone, wallet, and headphones. Thankfully, a friend lent me his old iPhone 12. However, I have an Apple ID associated with my old Belgian phone number, and I've since moved back to the U.S. My current number is American. Since my Apple ID is in recovery, I'm stuck without access to iMessages or app downloads, which is frustrating because I need my banking and transit apps while waiting for new bank cards. I'm considering setting up a new Apple ID just for the time being to get these essential apps. Will creating a new Apple ID hinder my chances of recovering my old account?

Creating a new Apple ID won't interfere with the recovery of your old account. If you're in a pinch and can't wait, it's a good idea to set up a temporary account to use. Just keep in mind that once you regain access to your old account, you might have to use the temporary Apple ID password for any apps downloaded under that account. If you want to switch back fully to your old one later, you can either delete those apps and download them again, or do a complete reset of the iPhone and set it up with your recovered account, which is a bit drastic but could also restore your iCloud backup if you used it.
When you get your phone back, consider setting up Family Sharing. This feature allows you to keep apps purchased or downloaded from both accounts. Plus, you can create shared photo albums where you can store pics without them counting against your Apple storage limit.
