Can I Install Linux Mint Directly to My Laptop’s Hard Drive Without Using a Live USB?

I'm having a tough time booting a live version of Linux Mint on my laptop, which currently has no operating system. I keep getting stuck at a busybox error right after the Mint logo. I've removed the hard drive from the laptop and I'm trying to download and install Linux Mint directly onto it from my PC, then put it back in. However, I've already attempted this and it only booted the live version without actually installing it, which resets everything after powering down. The last message I got said 'error shim_lock protocol not found', which left me puzzled. I did manage to tweak the grub file, allowing it to start loading Linux, but then I was hit with busybox errors again. Is there a way to properly install it from my PC and have it work once I return the hard drive to the laptop?

Have you tried using a different USB drive? It sounds like the one you're using might not be compatible with the boot setup of your laptop. If you're running into the same busybox errors, consider checking the USB stick or creating a fresh bootable drive with reliable software like Rufus. Just remember that installing directly onto a hard drive is doable but might require a bit of tweaking in BIOS settings to get everything aligned.

You could definitely install Linux Mint on your hard drive using another computer, but it's important to get the settings right. Since you mentioned a busybox error, there might be some conflicts with BIOS settings. You need to check if your original laptop supports EFI or uses Legacy mode. Sometimes the USB drives don’t become bootable properly depending on the computer. Before messing with the hard drive, I suggest diagnosing the USB setup fully—make sure it matches the architecture of the laptop you're installing to.
