I'm trying to breathe new life into my old laptop and make it capable of playing games via Steam, but I'm hitting a wall. I'm relatively new to Linux and I've heard about lightweight distributions that can run on old hardware. Here are the specs of my laptop: it has an Intel Pentium B940 processor, a GeForce GT520M GPU, and 4GB of DDR3 RAM (plus 8GB of swap just in case).
My journey started with Windows 10, which is a total resource hog, using up 100% CPU even when idle. I switched to Lubuntu 24.04, then 20.04 (which let me install GPU drivers), and finally landed on MX Linux 21.3 Fluxbox since Lubuntu had many missing libraries that blocked Steam from starting. After multiple installations and some serious troubleshooting, I finally managed to get Steam running on MX Linux, but unfortunately, I can't seem to get many games to work.
I also tried using commands for offloading the rendering to the GPU, but I'm feeling pretty lost and discouraged. I even considered switching back to Windows 7, but I know Steam support is limited on that OS.
My sole success so far is with Team Fortress 2, but it takes forever to load. Is there any hope for making this laptop a gaming machine, or am I just wasting my time? I'm using it as a way to learn Linux, but I'm starting to wonder if it's worth it in the end.

Honestly, it's tough to make an old machine like that into a decent gaming system. Linux can't do miracles! With only 4GB of RAM and an aging processor, you can expect limits on performance. While it might run some basic games, expect a rough experience overall. If you're serious about gaming, consider upgrading to a more modern system. You can snag a decent desktop on eBay for less than you think, and use it as a game server so your laptop can stream games more effectively.
I feel your pain! My old laptop is also struggling with performance. I managed to get Linux Mint running smoothly, which helped a lot with everyday tasks. But for gaming, yeah, 4GB RAM is pretty limiting, especially when you're also trying to run some demanding titles. You might find that debloating Windows 10 can make it more usable if you decide to go back to that, but a lightweight Linux distro is definitely a better fit for your hardware.
