I'm trying to install Minecraft shaders, but I need Java first, which requires my iMac's password. Unfortunately, I've forgotten my password, and all the tutorials I've found say that I need to be logged out to reset it using my Apple ID. I'm logged in on my Apple ID, though, and I really don't want to log out. Is there any way to reset my password while keeping my session active? I've also tried the Users and Groups settings, but they ask for the old password to change it.

Unfortunately, you can't reset your password using your Apple ID without logging out first. The process requires you to log out so that you can access the recovery options. Maybe a password reset disk could help, but you'd need to have prepared that beforehand. It might also help to consider reaching out to Apple Support for guidance.
Well, there's really no way around this issue. The system is designed this way for security reasons. If you've forgotten your password, you might want to look into recovery options through your Apple ID, but you will still need to log out to make changes.
Nope, sorry! You definitely need to log out to change your password via your Apple ID. It might seem like a hassle, but that's how Apple has set things up to keep your account secure.

That makes sense! I guess logging out is the only option. I haven't set up a password reset disk, so I’ll just have to follow the instructions to log out.
