Can I Swap Motherboards Between PC Builds Without Issues?

I'm planning to upgrade my gaming PC and give my current setup to my son, who will then pass his old PC on to my daughter. My build (let's call it #1) features a Ryzen 5800x, an Asus ROG Strix B550-F Gaming motherboard, and 32GB of RAM. My son's PC (#2) has a Ryzen 5600x, the same Asus motherboard, and also 32GB of RAM. The graphics card in both is identical—a fantastic EVGA FTW3 Ultra RTX 3080.

I recently bought a Ryzen 7800x3d CPU and a new Asus B650E Gaming motherboard for my build. I'm hoping to swap my components from build #1 into #2 and then piece together build #3 for my daughter using parts from #2 and a lesser GPU. My main concern is whether I can do this without having to reinstall Windows on both PCs. I'm worried there might be complications since the new build will have a different CPU—will Windows even recognize it? Any advice on how to manage the transfer smoothly would be greatly appreciated!

From my experience, you should be fine. I swapped from a Ryzen 3600XT with a B450 to a B550 and then upgraded to a 5700X3D, all using the same SSD, and I had no issues whatsoever. Just make sure your BIOS is updated when you make the switch, but since you're sticking to the same generation, you should be in good shape!

Why not just use 2 sticks of RAM? Motherboards tend to work better that way.

As far as I know, if you have an OEM version of Windows, it's tied to the motherboard. You can change CPUs, GPUs, and RAM without any hassle. If you have a Full Retail version of Windows, that can be transferred, but the original PC won't be able to use it after the switch.

Good to know! I'll just need to get a new Windows activation key then.

Just remember to boot into the BIOS after swapping everything and select the correct boot drive. That should help things run smoothly!

Thanks for the tip! That's what I was hoping for.
