I'm considering switching my AMD GPU for an NVIDIA one because my college is recommending NVIDIA for my upcoming course. I currently have a lot of AMD hardware in my PC. Is it feasible to simply replace the GPU, or will I need to change my motherboard and possibly other components?

I get what you're saying! Some of the advice around GPUs can sound off. In reality, lots of people just use cloud instances like AWS or Azure for AI work instead of investing in personal GPUs.
Absolutely, you can switch from an AMD GPU to an NVIDIA one without needing to change your motherboard. Both types fit into the same PCIe x16 slots, so it’s pretty straightforward.
I think they might be suggesting NVIDIA for certain software compatibility, especially since I'm getting my master's in AI. It's not mandatory, but NVIDIA GPUs can really speed up model training. Not sure I’ll get one, though.
I'm curious why they are pushing NVIDIA so hard. It's a big investment, and there are many GPUs that perform well without the need for switching brands. Seems a bit questionable to me.
It's definitely possible to transition to an NVIDIA GPU. Just follow the DDU process to ensure all old AMD drivers are completely removed first. Here's a quick rundown:
1. Get the DDU tool.
2. Download the NVIDIA drivers ahead of time but don't run them yet.
3. Boot into Safe Mode using 'msconfig' on your PC.
4. Use DDU to wipe out the AMD drivers.
5. Power down your PC, replace the AMD GPU with the NVIDIA GPU, then reboot.
6. Finally, install the new NVIDIA drivers.
It sounds more complicated than it is, but it's pretty easy once you start!
