I've used Windows for decades, but Windows 11 has become frustrating on my system, with lag, glitches, bugs, and performance that feels worse than it should. I'm considering moving to Linux to get away from the bloat and constant changes, but I'm worried about compatibility.
My PC has an ASRock B550M Pro4 motherboard, Ryzen 7 5700X3D, 64GB of DDR4 memory, two SSDs, two HDDs, and an RTX 5070 Ti. I use a large Steam library, PreSonus Studio One 5 for music production, DaVinci Resolve for video editing, Virtual Desktop for PC VR, Channels DVR, and Plex.
Can I test Linux without committing immediately? Which distributions would be good choices for this hardware? Is there any practical way to transfer my existing setup, or would I need to reinstall everything? How much of my software is likely to work through Linux compatibility tools such as Wine or Proton, and which parts—especially VR, music production, video editing, and media servers—might require Windows or replacement software?

Steam is generally one of the easier parts of the transition. The Steam client includes Proton, which runs many Windows games on Linux. A large portion of games work with little or no adjustment, but compatibility varies. Games using certain kernel-level anti-cheat systems can fail completely, so check each important title before switching. Non-Steam games from other stores can usually be handled with launchers such as Heroic or Lutris, though they may require more setup.
Your specialized applications are where you need to be cautious. Wine-based tools can run some Windows programs, but compatibility is not guaranteed and creative software often has problems with plugins, drivers, performance, or project files. Studio One 5 may work for some people but should be tested with your actual instruments and plugins. DaVinci Resolve has a Linux version, although setup and codec support can be more complicated than on Windows. Plex is well-supported on Linux, and Channels DVR may work depending on the exact server requirements.
VR is the biggest uncertainty. Linux support depends heavily on the headset, runtime, games, and tracking hardware. Virtual Desktop and community-supported VR solutions can work in some setups, but manufacturers generally prioritize Windows, so I would keep a Windows installation available if VR is important.
The hardware should be well-supported, and the safest way to begin is with a live USB. You can boot distributions such as Linux Mint, Fedora KDE, or Zorin OS without changing your drives, then check your graphics, audio, networking, and peripherals. If you like the experience, dual-booting lets you keep Windows available while you gradually move over. Make a proper backup first, and don’t repartition drives containing important data until you’re comfortable with the process.
That sounds less risky than wiping Windows immediately. I’ll probably start with a live USB and test the hardware first.
There isn’t a one-click migration from Windows to Linux. The operating system and applications normally need to be installed again, while personal files can be copied to a separate drive or restored from backup. Linux alternatives exist for many common programs, but replacing a professional workflow can take time. Wine, Bottles, and similar tools can run some Windows-only applications, but they range from working immediately to requiring extensive troubleshooting—or not working at all.
A good transition plan would be to keep Windows on one drive, install Linux on another, and move your everyday tasks over gradually. Use Linux-native applications where possible, reserve Windows for software or VR that doesn’t work reliably, and only remove Windows after several weeks of testing.
I don’t use Microsoft Office or Adobe products, so that removes two of the usual obstacles. Keeping Windows around for the programs that need it seems like the most practical approach.

I use Virtual Desktop to connect to the PC, so VR is one of the areas I’m most concerned about. It sounds like I should test that before considering a full switch.
