I'm planning to hand down my old phone to my kid, and I'm wondering how to keep it covered under AppleCare One. My kid's current phone already has AppleCare One, so will he be able to just swap his existing coverage to my old phone since it's also covered?

You can’t transfer it directly. AppleCare One is tied to the Apple ID of the device, not just the plan itself. So since your phone is under your Apple ID, it won't be covered under your kid's plan.
I get that, but since my kids also pay for their own AppleCare One, it seems a bit ridiculous that their devices wouldn’t be covered anymore if they don’t belong to the same account.
