Can I Transfer My Windows Key Before Switching to Linux?

I'm currently running Windows on my old laptop, but I'm really fed up with all the issues it brings. I'm considering making the switch to Linux Mint. My main concern is about the Windows activation key—what happens to it when I install Linux? Will it be permanently erased? Is there a way to transfer my key to another device? I've heard it might be tied to the motherboard, but I could be mistaken since it's been a while since I looked into it. I really want to avoid having to purchase a new Windows key if I decide to switch back later.

The Windows activation key should still be safe even after you install Linux. Your key info is stored on Microsoft's servers, so if you ever reinstall Windows, it will automatically activate. However, if you want to transfer the key to another device, make sure to print out the key beforehand and remove it from your current Windows setup. That way, you can use it on a new machine later. Just a tip: it might be a good idea to try dual-booting first. That way you can test Linux without giving up Windows right away!

Dual-booting is smart! You can see if Linux meets your needs before fully committing. That way, if something goes wrong, you still have Windows to fall back on.
