Can I Upgrade to a New CPU and Motherboard While Keeping My Old GPU and RAM?

I'm in a bit of a situation because Microsoft has decided that my current PC can't upgrade to Windows 11, and support is ending soon. Right now, I have an Intel Core i5-3570K, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970, and an old Asus p8z77-vpro motherboard with DDR3 RAM. If I were to buy a Ryzen CPU and the appropriate motherboard, would I still be able to use my old DDR3 RAM and GPU? I would like to upgrade my GPU later on and maybe my RAM if necessary.

Unfortunately, AM4 sockets are only for DDR4, so you'd need to get new RAM. As for your GPU, you can keep using it for now, but it's becoming dated and will be limited in driver support soon.

Thanks for the heads-up! I guess I really should plan on upgrading the RAM too.

Totally agree. Better to prepare for the future!

Just a hint: if you’re only looking to upgrade because of Windows 11, double-check if there's a BIOS update available for your current motherboard. Sometimes, it might just get you through!

Good advice! I'll see if a BIOS update can help.

Yeah, I had a similar situation. The update made all the difference!

You definitely should think about upgrading the motherboard, CPU, and RAM altogether. Keeping your old GPU might lead to bottlenecking since it's not the latest model. It might just be time to fully refresh your setup!

You're working with DDR3 RAM, but Ryzen CPUs need DDR4 or DDR5, so you'd have to upgrade your RAM if you switch to Ryzen.
