Can I Use an HDD as My Main Drive for Gaming and Audio Work?

I just built a new PC using some hand-me-down parts, and I'm really excited about it! The boot drive is a 100GB SSD from my fiancée's old setup, but I need a second internal drive for everything else. SSD prices are crazy at the moment, but my younger brother is sending me his 2TB internal HDD. He used it for his gaming PC and said it performed well, even with more demanding games than what I usually play. I'm also getting my old Xbox One S All Digital 1TB; I thought about cracking it open to use its SSD after reformatting, but I just want to know if the HDD will be sufficient for my Steam games and Adobe Audition tasks, or if I should brace for slow performance? Just to add, the HDD specs are Western Digital 2TB SATA 6gb/s PCHA500.

HDDs can be used for all the storage needs, but keep in mind that loading your OS or demanding games from them can lead to frustration. If you can find a cheap 256GB SSD, that would make a world of difference.

That sounds like the way to go! I just found a listing for a budget SSD that looks good. Thanks for the tip!

For Adobe Audition and regular gaming, your HDD should handle things okay, but there might be some speed bumps. Some games might even require an SSD, so keep that in mind. The best approach is to try it out once your HDD arrives and see how well it performs with the games you're into.

RimWorld is pretty light, so it should be fine. I mostly play that and smaller titles, so I can deal with some slow loading.

An HDD will definitely do the job, but be prepared for slower load times, especially on bigger titles. Keep your operating system and software on the SSD, and use the HDD for larger files or games you don't play very often.

That's a good plan. I was initially thinking of putting everything on the HDD, but now I’ll prioritize the SSD for my main programs.
