Can My 7200MHz RAM Reach Full Speed on an AMD 9800X3D?

Hey everyone! I upgraded my PC last year with an Asus Z790 E Gaming WiFi II, an i9 13900K, and some Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR5 7200MHz RAM (4x 16GB, CL34-44-44-96 at 1.45V). I mostly planned this build for playing heavily modded games like Skyrim, Fallout 3, and New Vegas, but I'm still stuck on my old DDR4 setup with an i9 9900K. Recently, I found out that the AMD 9800X3D has better single-core performance, especially in these types of games. I'm thinking of switching to a Gigabyte X870E Aorus Elite motherboard, but I'm concerned about my RAM. Will it run at the full 7200MHz speed, or would it be better to downclock it? I really don't want to spend a fortune on new RAM if I can make this work. My GPU is an RTX 4090. Any advice would be awesome!

You can definitely run your 7200MHz RAM, but keep in mind that AMD CPUs generally perform better with speeds around 6000-6400MHz. Once you hit about 8000MHz, you might start seeing some benefits. So while your RAM can work, the actual speed could be a bit limited due to how AMD's architecture handles it.

Just downclock it to around 6200 or 6400MHz and try tightening the timings. Alternatively, if you really want to push it, you could try gear 2 for 8000MHz+, but you’ll need to make sure your motherboard can handle it and you know what you're doing.

You’ll get it running, but it might need some manual tuning since it’s quite fast for the infinity fabric. Some faster RAM kits have a second profile that might run slower, so check your BIOS for that. You can also enable EXPO and dial it down to 6000MHz, which tends to work well with the X3D CPUs since they don't rely heavily on RAM speed past a certain point.
