I recently bought an old work laptop that my company was selling. It seemed like a great deal, and when I set it up, it looked like it had been factory reset. Since it was previously owned by someone else at the company, I'm wondering if there's any chance they can still monitor my activity on it. Should I be taking any extra steps to ensure my privacy?

You don't have to worry about it as long as you've really done a full factory reset. That process usually clears out any company software that could monitor your usage.
Even if they somehow could track it, that would be illegal. If you discover any instance of tracking, you could consider legal action against them over privacy violations.
Generally, if the laptop has been properly wiped and reset to factory settings, your company shouldn’t be able to track anything you do on it. However, just to be safe, you might want to check the BIOS settings in case any tracking software was overlooked.
It’s not very common for standard laptops, but some companies do add tracking software. If you find anything unusual in the BIOS, it’s best to contact the IT department.

I was wondering if companies usually customize hardware to track devices. Is that common?
