Can My IP Address Be Traced from an Anonymous Email?

I'm looking to send an anonymous email to my kids' hockey club about replacing a poor coach who's driving parents away. Since no one wants to speak up due to his connections, I figured emailing might be an option. However, I want to ensure my identity remains hidden. I opened a new email account through a secure service but I'm not sure if there's a way they could trace it back to me. Can someone easily track my IP address from an email?

It really depends on your email provider. For instance, Gmail doesn’t show the sender’s IP address when you send an email. So it might be worth checking your service’s settings.

Yes, email headers typically include IP addresses, which could potentially identify where the message originated. To stay completely anonymous, try using a public computer like at a library or internet café—just avoid going there when security cameras are around.

In short, while your IP can be traced with some effort, it's unlikely that a regular person would expend the resources to do so. You could also try a disposable email service, but be aware that some servers might block them.

Honestly, it's just youth hockey, so I doubt they'll put in the effort to identify you. If your email is unsigned and they see you're not willing to put your name on it, they might just ignore it anyway.

Be cautious! While ProtonMail and other encrypted services prioritize privacy, there are reports that they can be compelled to reveal user data if pushed hard enough. But knowing someone’s IP address and figuring out their identity is still a hurdle that requires more than just that information.
