Considering a Switch from Windows to Linux – Advice Needed!

I've been thinking about switching from Windows for the last couple of weeks, but I feel a bit overwhelmed. My current setup has a 5090 with a 9800x3d and 96GB of RAM (I even ran a Minecraft server while gaming!). I've done some homework and know that Linux Mint is user-friendly, but I'm also curious about Pop!_OS and CachyOS. My Linux experience is pretty limited; I've only tinkered a bit with my Steam Deck. I'm looking for some guidance on which distribution might be best for a newcomer like me. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I say just try it out on a secondary hard drive. If it doesn’t work out, you can always go back to Windows. If it does work well, then you can fully switch from there!

That's a good point! I’m planning to do that tonight. My dad thinks I'm making it harder for myself, but I just want to learn!

Starting with Linux Mint is a great idea since it’s really user-friendly. Once you're comfortable, you can explore other distros like Fedora KDE, which is also easy to use and has a nice interface.

I totally agree! I began with Mint (Cinnamon) but switched to Fedora KDE because I wanted something a bit different.

Mint sounds like a solid choice! I’m curious about the GPU compatibility too, especially with some games.

I'd strongly advise against CachyOS for beginners. It’s based on Arch and can break easily. Stick with Mint for now, and once you're more comfortable, you can explore other options.

Good to know! I’ll keep CachyOS on the back burner until I’m more experienced.

Check out the migration page online for a ton of tips! A good practice is to only use root when needed and be careful with third-party repositories. Also, make sure to verify your ISOs after downloading to avoid issues!

I’ve been using Fedora for a few weeks, and it works like a dream! It’s pretty stable and handles everything well, so you might want to consider it after trying Mint.

That’s awesome! I’ll give Mint a shot first and then see how I feel about moving to Fedora later.
