Considering a Switch to Linux: Is It the Right Move for Me?

I'm thinking about making the switch to Linux since Windows 10 will stop receiving updates soon, and I don't want to spend a lot on new hardware. I have some coding skills in Python and Java, but I'm not an expert. I'd love to know if I can still get some essential applications and tools after switching. Here are my main requirements and concerns:

1. I need access to alternatives for PowerPoint and Word (they don't have to be the Microsoft versions).
2. I need a way to connect to Remote Desktop for working from home.
3. I want secure access to my emails.
4. It would be great to install PTC Creo 11.0, but I can access it through Remote Desktop if necessary, but having it offline would be a bonus.

For gaming, I have a decent Steam library, but I'm quite busy with university and usually use my PS5 for gaming anyway, so losing PC gaming isn't a major concern for me. Just looking for some guidance on whether this transition is feasible and what I should consider.

For office suites, LibreOffice is a popular choice and should cover most of your needs! Also, setting up Remote Desktop might depend on your company's policies, so remember to check in with them. As for emails, if you're using a standard provider, Thunderbird is a great option. For PTC Creo, you might have to explore running it through Winboat or check resources for getting it to work on Linux. About gaming, many titles run great on Linux—just avoid some of the big hitters like Fortnite. ProtonDB is your friend here!

You can check out options like LibreOffice or OnlyOffice for your PowerPoint and Word needs. For Remote Desktop, Remmina is a solid choice. If you’re concerned about email, Thunderbird and Evolution can be quite secure. As for PTC Creo, some people recommend using Wine or even a Windows VM to run it, though I'm not sure how well that’ll work offline. Regarding gaming, Linux has improved a lot—most of your Steam library should work fine! You may want to peek at ProtonDB to see compatibility for your specific games.

Switching to Linux doesn’t require any coding knowledge, especially with beginner-friendly distros like Mint that come with graphical interfaces. Most will have a built-in office suite like LibreOffice, or you can easily use online alternatives. Setting up Remote Desktop shouldn’t be too hard, just look out for tutorials online. And regarding PTC Creo, check out forums on running it in a virtual machine or add it as a non-Steam game in Steam. As for email security, the level is typically the same regardless of OS.
