Considering Switching to Linux – Will I Lose My Files and Apps?

Hey everyone! I'm thinking about making the switch from Windows 10 to Linux since support for Windows 10 is ending soon. I'm a bit worried about the security risks if I stay with Windows. However, I have a lot of important files and some paid software on my laptop, like OBS and my overlays. If I install Linux, will I lose those? Also, I play a lot of games on Steam (nothing competitive) and Minecraft. Can I run those games on any Linux distro? Lastly, can anyone recommend a user-friendly yet customizable Linux distro for me? Thanks!

You're right to be concerned about your files! Before switching to Linux, it's crucial to back up all your data, including any paid software like OBS. Windows apps don't run natively on Linux, so you'd likely have to reinstall them on the Linux version if you can find them.

Got it! So just to clarify, I should save everything on an external drive, install the new distro, and then copy everything back, except for the Windows programs. Thanks for the tip!
