Did I completely ruin my AM5 upgrade?

Hey everyone,

I recently decided to upgrade my setup and went with the AM5 platform, purchasing a new Gigabyte B650 Eagle motherboard, Klevv FIT DDR5 3000/CL30 RAM, and a 7800X3D CPU from eBay (which seemed reliable at first). I got a bit too excited during the installation and accidentally bent a couple of CPU pins while handling the motherboard.

After putting it all together, I was able to get a POST, but the DRAM LED stayed lit no matter what I tried—only using one stick of RAM, clearing the CMOS, and even removing the battery didn't help. I attempted a BIOS update via QFlash to version F35, and it seemed to go okay, but now the system won't turn on at all when I hit the power button, despite checking all the connections and the PSU power switch.

I'm starting to think I might have bricked the motherboard. Plus, I noticed a bit of thermal paste under the CPU, which I believe is on the LGA socket. From what I've read, using isopropyl alcohol should help clean that up, but I'm unsure if that can save the CPU as well.

Based on what I've shared, do you think I really messed up just with the pins, or was there something wrong with the CPU or RAM from the start?

You've really landed in a tricky spot! Hopefully, you can find a way to salvage this situation. Can’t hurt to double-check everything before deciding how to move forward.

If you knowingly assembled everything with already bent pins, then yeah, you really messed up. Those pins are crucial for the CPU to work right, and it’s possible you fried it as well.

The thermal paste shouldn’t be a huge concern since it's generally non-conductive. But those bent pins? That's a whole different problem. If you're feeling brave, you could try to carefully bend them back using a mechanical pencil or a tiny blade, but worst case, you might need a new motherboard.

Looking at your photos, it seems like the CPU might have taken some damage too, considering the discoloration. The bent pins look pretty significant, so it's likely both components are done for. Sorry to say, but it doesn't look good for you.

Yeah, I noticed the discoloration too. It's such a bummer because I was really looking forward to this upgrade.

Try straightening the bent pins and clean the thermal paste with some isopropyl alcohol. Don’t worry too much about the first POST; it can take some time because of memory training. That’s pretty normal, and the DRAM LED can stay on during that process.

I might give that one last shot, but since the motherboard won't power on, it feels like a lost cause. Thanks for the tip!
