Did I Just Get Hacked by Clicking a Link on a Forum?

I recently started browsing a forum and came across a comment from a user referred to as OP. The comment simply said 'source,' so I clicked on it, expecting it to be like Twitter links. Instead, it took me to an external site that warned my phone had been hacked! I've already changed my Apple ID password and I'm planning to change my passwords on my social media accounts too. What else should I do to secure my phone?

I totally feel for you! Clicking on links can be risky, especially if they don’t seem legit. Most of the time, those warnings are just scare tactics designed to get you to download something. Since you already turned off your Wi-Fi and data before shutting down your phone, it sounds like you're already being proactive. Just keep an eye on any unusual activity in your accounts and maybe even enable two-factor authentication where you can.

When users reference a source, it usually just links to a website to back up their claims, and it can often be benign. However, it’s essential to be cautious with links from unknown accounts because they can lead to malicious sites. In your case, it's good you changed your Apple ID password. To further secure your phone, consider installing a reputable antivirus app and performing a scan to check for any unwanted software.

It’s unlikely that your phone got hacked just from clicking a link unless you were prompted to download something. Just to be safe, make sure all your software is up to date and check app permissions on your device. Also, if you receive any odd messages or notifications going forward, be on the alert! You're doing the right things by changing your passwords.
