I recently bought a set of 6000MHz RAM with a CL-48 latency for £250, and I'm starting to worry if this was a bad choice. How significant is the latency difference between CL-48 and something like CL-36? Will it affect gaming performance and other tasks a lot?

Honestly, you probably won’t notice much of a difference in everyday use. In the DDR5 era, the impact of RAM latency is often overstated. You're likely good with what you have.
While Linus says it might not matter, I think it really depends on your CPU and the games you play. If you have something like a 7700X or i5 14400F, performance can vary quite a bit. Some games are really sensitive to RAM speed, so keep that in mind!
For the price you paid, that CL-48 latency seems high. In my opinion, if you have the opportunity to return it, you might be better off swapping it for a lower latency option. With CL-48, the performance gains over something cheaper might not justify the cost.
Check out this recent video from Linus Tech Tips! They say the difference in performance really isn’t that noticeable, so you might be fine with what you've got. It's all about what you need for your setup, honestly.
You’ll lose a bit of performance, but honestly, the differences in DDR5 aren’t massive. If you're looking for more value, consider overclocking the RAM, too.
