Do Employers Find Game Development Hobbies Valuable?

Hey everyone! I've been diving into back-end and front-end development as I aim to turn my hobby into a career. I've been programming since I was 10, starting with modding Minecraft, then shifting to Scratch, and mostly focusing on Roblox. Logic-based programming is my jam! I'm mostly self-taught, but I'm currently taking online courses, learning JavaScript, which is similar to Lua, the core language of Roblox's Luau. I've also been playing around with HTML and CSS, trying to create some cool projects like a Flappy Bird clone in the browser. So my question is: do employers care about my game projects on Roblox or Scratch, or even my web dev projects?

Honestly, I learned the hard way not to mention game development on my resume. It can raise eyebrows for HR. I shifted my focus to my programming skills instead.

But isn't game development all about programming skills?

In today's job market, hobby projects alone might not be enough. While your skills are what truly matter, having any standout projects, especially if you worked in a team, could be a good bonus. A solid GitHub with bug tracking and version control can definitely help. But remember, experience and a degree often carry more weight right now.

If you can showcase a personal game development project and share the code on GitHub, along with a walkthrough of your thought process, you’ll have a strong chance against other candidates. Having something tangible really stands out!
