Do I Have to Pay Taxes or Tariffs on Computer Parts from Canada to the US Under $800?

I'm looking to buy some computer parts from a vendor in Canada because I found a good deal and they have everything I need in one place. I've read that there used to be a rule saying anything under $800 is exempt from duties and tariffs, but with all the changes happening lately, I'm not sure if that's still the case. Has anyone in the US purchased computer parts from Canada recently? Did you end up having to pay any additional fees or taxes?

The key factor here is where the product actually originates from. Customs can be tricky—if they think it’s coming from somewhere else like China, then the de minimis exemption wouldn't apply. I had to pay a hefty duty of over 55% on some 3D printer parts that I thought would be safe because they were shipped from Austria but were flagged as coming from China. Definitely not worth the risk if you can buy locally!

Yikes, that's a scary fee! I’m trying to avoid any unexpected costs too.

That’s what I’ve been worried about! I think it’s better to double-check the origin before buying.

Tariffs have actually been around for a long time. When I used to buy and sell electronics on eBay years ago, we often declared lower values for items to dodge extra fees. Usually, it’s not the customs that has gotten stricter, but more about whether your item gets picked for inspection or not. Sometimes extra broker fees can pop up unexpectedly too.

I just found a tariff calculator online that seems pretty accurate. It says I shouldn’t have any extra fees, fingers crossed!

That sounds promising! I hope it works out for you.
