Do I Need a Computer Science Degree to Become a Back-End Developer?

I'm about to finish high school and I'm not from the U.S. I'm studying IT and have certificates in C#, and I'm currently working on Python through online courses. I aim to become a back-end developer, but I also want to keep my options open for roles in cloud engineering or DevOps down the road. My main concern is whether I really need a Computer Science degree, or if a degree in Computer Engineering or something similar would suffice. I've heard mixed opinions about the value of a CS degree and I'm worried about my ability to succeed in that field. What do hiring professionals think?

While it’s possible to find jobs without a degree, you’re up against a lot of computer science grads with internship experience. They have a leg up, so having that degree can definitely improve your chances.

Computer Engineering could work, but most back-end development roles align closely with what you learn in a CS program. A CS degree tends to give you a stronger foundation directly related to back-end tasks.

I know a few exceptional back-end devs from computer engineering backgrounds, so it can work, but a CS degree might give you an edge in the long run.

You can technically get a job without a degree, but it's challenging. Companies often use degrees to filter applicants, so having one really helps. I got a full-time back-end role during my second year of university, and it made a difference in securing that position rapidly.

The bottom line is, while you can learn the necessary skills without a degree, having one certainly broadens your opportunities. Degree or not, what matters most is that you can demonstrate your abilities. Get involved with projects that you can show potential employers!

The job market can be unpredictable. A degree can help you stand out, especially when competition is fierce. But connections can also get you interviews, so if you can network well, that might balance things out.
