Do I Need a Dual PSU for My High-Power Setup?

I'm building a new PC and I'm facing a power dilemma. My components have a standard total power draw of about 1099 watts, but users have reported spikes up to 650-700 watts on the Threadripper 7970x, likely due to overclocking—which I won't be doing since stability is critical for my live broadcast virtual production work. Additionally, I'm planning to add a second 5090 GPU soon, and I could be looking at a continuous power requirement of around 1500 watts for long sessions of heavy workload like real-time rendering, motion capture, and chroma keying. Given that standard US outlets are only rated for 15 amps, I'm wondering if I actually need a dual PSU setup. Also, I have a 1200-watt PSU from a couple of months ago that I could use alongside a new 1600-watt PSU. How does power regulation work with dual PSUs?

First off, which 1600-watt PSU did you end up getting? If you're running dual PSUs at that wattage, remember not to have both plugged into the same circuit. It could overload it!

Thanks for the heads up! I got the Seasonic USA Prime TX-1600. And yep, I'm aware about the circuit issue—good advice!

I'm curious about how the power regulation works too, especially since I thought motherboards don’t usually handle multiple GPUs without some special setup.
