Do I Need the Exact Asus Charger for My Laptop?

Hi everyone! I have an Asus laptop that suddenly stopped charging, and to make things worse, my warranty expired back in February. I'm considering getting a new charger since my current one is an Asus model A19-090P2A with a 90W output (19V × 4.74A). I'm wondering if I need to replace it with the exact same Asus charger, or if I can safely use a different brand as long as it matches these specifications. Is it necessary to get a 90W charger specifically, or can I use one with higher power?

You can definitely get an aftermarket charger that matches those specs, but watch out—like aftermarket batteries, some can be unreliable or even unsafe. Personally, if I'm on a budget, I'd go for a used OEM charger. Especially since it's something that might not be supervised all the time. Just make sure to check listings and reviews before buying!

You should always stick with the manufacturer's charger for best performance, but as a backup plan, there are universal laptop chargers that meet those specs. Just keep in mind that in rare cases, a bad charger could short out and damage your laptop. It’s uncommon, but it can happen. However, you should be fine using the right specs!

Make sure the voltage is exactly the same, but the amps/watts can be higher (at least what you have now). It's best to stick with a genuine OEM charger to avoid potential issues later on. Since yours is 90W, just get one that’s at least that much. You can often find decent used ones on eBay, but be cautious with new ones that claim to be genuine—definitely read reviews first!

So, one of my friends has an INSIGNIA 90W AC Adapter. The AC input and DC output specs are the same as my charger. Do you think it's safe to use this one? I’m worried about the long-term effects on my laptop.

As long as the voltage and amps match, it should be fine! Just ensure it fits properly and that your laptop recognizes it. If it charges like normal, you should be good for the long run. OEM is safest, but a solid third-party option with the correct specs usually works too.
