Do I Need to Reinstall Windows When Swapping CPUs?

I'm currently using a Z790 motherboard with a Core i9-14900KS, and I'm planning to replace it with a Core i9-14900K. Do I need to format Windows when I make this change? Also, what about my current overclocking and undervolting settings? Should I clear the BIOS before installing the new CPU?

Since you're not changing your motherboard, you shouldn't need to reinstall Windows. However, it's a good idea to clear the CMOS after you install the new CPU to reset the BIOS and optimize it for the new chip. The first boot might take a bit longer than usual, and make sure to re-enable XMP for your RAM. Keep in mind that each CPU is a little different, so you'll need to go through your overclocking settings again to find what's stable with the new processor.

I’d recommend doing a fresh install just to be safe, but you might not have to. It depends on how different the CPUs feel. Some people make changes without issues, especially if you're not switching motherboards and just swapping out the CPU.

You definitely don’t need to reinstall anything. You’re using the same motherboard and just swapping CPUs, so it should just work out of the box. I did a bigger swap recently—from an Intel i7 8700K to an AMD 9700X—and all I had to do was update some drivers. You should be all set with just a plug-and-play!
