Do I need to upgrade my PSU for my new motherboard?

Hey everyone! I hope you're all doing well. I'm in a bit of a jam here. I've got a build that I've been running since 2014, which includes a Z87-A motherboard, GTX 970, and 32GB of DDR3 1600 RAM, powered by a Cooler Master G650M 650W PSU. I primarily use my rig for some gaming and IT labs as a cybersecurity engineer.

Recently, I bought a new kit from a colleague that includes an ASUS B660 PLUS D4 motherboard, an i5-13400F processor, and 32GB of DDR3 3600 RAM. I've reused my existing case, cooler, and SSDs. However, the new motherboard isn't booting at all—no fans, no lights. I've tried multiple RAM slots, checked the CPU, and even used my multimeter and thermal camera for electrical issues, but no luck.

Now I'm wondering, do I need to upgrade my power supply? Are there new PSU standards that I might not be aware of that could be causing this boot issue? Thanks for any insights! Take care.

Have you thought about trying a barebone setup? Sometimes isolating the components can help troubleshoot.

Your Cooler Master G650M (650W) is technically compatible with your new ASUS B660 PLUS D4 and i5-13400F build. Both use standard ATX power connectors, and there are no new power standards you missed. That said, since your PSU is quite old, it may not reliably provide power anymore. If you've checked all cables and still have no response, it might be time to try a different PSU or upgrade to a newer one for better reliability. TL;DR: No new standards, but yeah, your old PSU could be causing the issue.

Your PSU should work. I had a similar problem with my setup because I messed up the front panel connections. Check those cables; sometimes, the power button connection can be a culprit!

Nope, the PSU standards haven't changed, so your Cooler Master G650M should be fine. Make sure all the cables are connected properly. If it's still not booting up, it could be a motherboard issue. You might want to try powering it on without the CPU and RAM to see if it at least gets power.
