I recently got a new iPhone 17 and I'm considering adding AppleCare+. The problem is that my old iPhone 14 Pro was damaged before I got it, with front and back damage and issues with the front camera after being run over. I'm curious whether AppleCare+ ever covers devices that had damage before the coverage started. Do they check the device for existing damage before insuring it, or is it only for future incidents? I want to understand how this policy works before making a purchase. Thanks for your help!

Pretty much, yeah. AppleCare+ is meant to cover accidents that happen after you buy it. If they find any prior damage, that might void coverage. Just be upfront when getting insurance; it saves a lot of hassle.

Thanks for the info! I guess I should just focus on protecting the new phone.
