Does Gaming on Linux Affect Latency for Competitive Play?

Hey folks! I'm considering switching to Linux and I'm mainly interested in its gaming compatibility. From what I've seen on ProtonDB, it seems pretty good, but I'm worried about potential disadvantages, especially for competitive gaming. I understand that Steam Proton translates code for Linux, but I'm curious if this introduces any latency issues, particularly for fast-paced FPS games like Overwatch or Marvel Rivals. Would I experience more input lag compared to running games on Windows? Or am I overthinking this?

You shouldn't worry too much about input lag! In most cases, the lag on Linux is pretty similar to what you'd get on Windows. In fact, there are instances where Linux actually performs better because it doesn't have the same overhead that Windows does. So unless you're in a really rare situation with specific controllers, you might be overthinking this.

Good to know! That's a relief for me since I play a lot of fast-paced games.

Oh, and just to add, while some games might run without issues, you'll miss out on certain tools and utilities—like Adobe software. But hey, maybe that's a plus for some!

One of the biggest challenges with gaming on Linux isn’t latency but rather software support, especially for competitive titles. Many games have anti-cheat systems that don't work on Linux, which can be a dealbreaker for multiplayer FPS games. The actual gameplay might be fine, but you could run into issues regarding competitive integrity when it comes to online play.

Exactly! Until developers start investing in anti-cheat solutions for Linux, competitive gaming may be a hassle.
