I was wondering if putting Steam on a separate drive would help me avoid potential malware risks when downloading games. If I accidentally download a game that's infected with malware, would having Steam on a different drive shield my main system from any harm? Would this only work if I make sure to connect just one drive at a time? I've heard that some Steam games have been known to carry malware, so I'm looking to be cautious here.

If you’re really worried about malware, my suggestion would be to install a fresh copy of Windows on your second drive and boot from it to play games. But honestly, it seems a bit excessive since the chances of that happening are pretty slim these days.
Technically, yes, but your setup would be tricky. If you disconnect your main drive, your computer needs access to its boot partition, meaning you'd need to have a bootable secondary drive too. Most consumer motherboards aren't great with hotplugging drives either. Just be careful with what games you download and play.
