Does PCI-E 3.0: X8 vs X16 Make a Big Difference in Performance?

I'm looking at upgrading my GPU from the integrated Vega on my Ryzen CPU, which currently runs PCI-E 3.0 in an X8 configuration. I know that some Ryzen CPUs support X16 but mine only supports X8 with the 5700G. I'm considering GPUs like the AMD 6600, RTX 3060, or even the latest RTX 5050. Can anyone tell me how significant the performance difference is between X8 and X16 for PCI-e 3.0?

Actually, the performance difference between PCI-E 3.0 X8 and X16 is pretty minimal, often just a few percentage points. For example, tests showed that the NVIDIA RTX 5090 at X8 lost only about 10% performance, and lower-end cards might see an even smaller drop—like 1%. But remember, if you're gaming with a lot of VRAM usage, you might want a GPU with more than 8GB VRAM, as that’s where the X8 limitation starts to hurt performance.

That's not the best example. If a card has the VRAM it needs, it performs well, but with an 8GB card, the impact of running on X8 can be significant.

I believe the Ryzen 5700G should support PCIe 3.0 X16, as it’s similar to the R5 5500 which I have running at that configuration with my 5700XT. However, keep in mind that some cards like the RTX 5050 only support X8 on PCIe 5.0, so you'll get that X8 PCIe 3.0 speed on older motherboards. The RTX 3060 supports X16 on PCIe 4.0, which means it will still run at X16 PCIe 3.0 with maybe a slight performance drop of 1-2% with the 5700G. On the other hand, the RX 6600 also only supports X8 PCIe 4.0, so you might see similar negligible drops when compared to X16.

Yes, the 5700G does support X16, but it depends on the motherboard setup as mine can run it that way.
