Hi everyone! I recently switched from Windows 11 to Linux Mint and I'm facing some frustrating issues with my system freezing and stuttering quite a bit. I've looked around online but haven't found a good fix yet. My CPU load usually stays below 50%, so I don't think it's an overload issue. Here's my hardware info:
- Laptop: Gigabyte
- Motherboard: Gigabyte
- GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4080 with proprietary drivers
- CPU: Intel 13700h
- Desktop Environment: Cinnamon 6.4.8
- Kernel Versions Tried: 6.8, 6.11, 6.14 (all have the same freezing problem)
The weird thing is, these lags can start right after I boot up the system. I'm about to give up if I can't find a solution!

Sometimes, just toggling your Wi-Fi off and back on can help improve system responsiveness. I experienced a similar slow-down after resuming from standby, and turning Wi-Fi off temporarily fixed it for me. Might be worth a shot!
What's your typical use case? Are there specific applications that trigger the freezes? If you can provide some screenshots of system monitor showing CPU and RAM usage, that would really help diagnose the issue further.
You might be hitting a RAM limitation—even though Linux should handle multitasking well, running out of RAM can lead to freezes. Consider adding a swap file which allows the system to temporarily move less-used processes to disk. You can also disable swap if you think your RAM can handle it, but be cautious, as it can lead to crashes if you run out of memory.
Have you checked the physical seating of your RAM? A loose RAM card can cause random freezes. Give it a check just to be sure, it might be the culprit.
It sounds like you need to make sure you've installed the proprietary NVIDIA drivers properly. Sometimes the open source drivers just don't cut it, leading to those performance issues. Have you checked if the proprietary drivers are correctly set up? You can do this through the driver manager.
