External HDD Works on Laptop but Not on Desktop – What’s Going On?

Hi everyone! I have an external HDD that my desktop PC doesn't recognize, even though it works just fine on my laptop. My motherboard is an MSI Z590-A PRO. I've done some research and think the problem might be due to insufficient USB power from the desktop. Last year, the HDD connected without any issues, but now, while the LED lights up, the drive isn't detected. I've heard that laptops might provide more USB power than desktops, which could be the cause of this issue. Has anyone else faced something similar? Also, why did it work perfectly on my desktop last year?

I've seen some peculiar USB port behaviors myself. Sometimes devices just stop responding for a stretch and then suddenly start working again after a while. It's strange! I've had SSDs in enclosures that behaved the same way. It might be an issue related to a bad signature or a driver mismatch. If you think the drive might be causing trouble due to drivers, checking Device Manager could help you figure that out.

It sounds like the power issue might be spot on. Desktop systems generally provide more power, but if you're plugged into a USB 2.0 port, that could be the culprit, especially compared to a USB 3.0 port on your laptop. I recommend trying to connect your HDD to one of the USB ports at the back of your desktop, as they usually offer more consistent power since they’re directly linked to the motherboard. Also, check if other USB devices work on the ports you're using; if not, you might have a faulty port.

I've been in a similar situation where an SSD just refused to work on some desktops but ran perfectly on others. Sometimes it’s just about the specific system configuration or temporary glitches. If your flash drive works fine on all ports, it sounds like your HDD might have a deeper issue. But yeah, drivers can play a big role too, so you might want to ensure everything’s up to date.
