I've recently faced a frustrating issue with my iPhone 15 Pro Max after shaving. I went from having a beard to just a mustache, and now Face ID won't recognize me at all. I've checked the settings, and it shows that device protection is activated, which means I can't just turn off Face ID. The device is insisting that I use Face ID to disable the protection, but obviously, that's not working. I was able to use my password last time for this, but this time it won't let me. Should I reach out to Apple support, or do I need to reset my phone? What's the best approach to resolve this?

It's a known quirk that stolen device protection can only be turned off with biometrics, which sucks in your case. If you set it up to allow disabling at trusted locations, head there with your phone. You can turn off the protection relatively easily and reset Face ID using your passcode. If you set it to always, then you're in a bit of a bind. Honestly, you might just need to get used to using your passcode for now while you grow your facial hair back! For future reference, make sure to do the extra Face ID scans wearing a mask and without your glasses, so it has more data points to recognize you. Good luck!
This is odd! I had a situation where Face ID wasn’t working for a bit, but it always let me use my passcode. Have you tried resetting Face ID in the settings or just letting your phone sit overnight and trying again in the morning? You never know!
Sounds really frustrating! Normally, Face ID defaults to your passcode if it doesn’t recognize you. Maybe try restarting your phone and see if that helps? Also, I totally agree about wishing for on-screen fingerprint recognition—it could be a great backup!

I actually had a similar issue yesterday, and I was able to disable the protection with just my password. Maybe there's a glitch?
