I'm in my first year studying cybersecurity, and I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed. It seems like everyone around me is busy building projects, tackling LeetCode problems, learning about AI in their work, and winning hackathons. Meanwhile, my college is organizing some small hackathons, but I don't feel equipped to contribute since I don't know how to build anything yet. I've thought about diving into data structures and algorithms, but I wonder if that's really necessary for a career in cybersecurity. I feel like I'm wasting my time, and I could really use some guidance on what I should prioritize in my freshman year.

I totally relate; I'm a junior feeling the same pressure! Just take it step by step. You don't need to rush into everything at once.
First off, don't beat yourself up by comparing your journey to others. You're just starting out! It’s essential to focus on your lectures and absorb what your professors are teaching you. Building a solid foundation now will help immensely later. Give yourself time to learn.

I get that, but we haven't covered anything related to cyber yet. It feels pointless at the moment.
