First-time Arch Linux Installation: Now My Screen Goes Black After Login, Help!

I just installed Arch Linux for the first time, and it seemed to go smoothly (even though I somehow lost my Windows 11, but I guess that's not the end of the world). The problem I'm facing now is that I can see the login screen just fine, but once I log in, the screen turns black and I can't do anything. Do I need to reinstall Arch, or is there a way to fix this issue?

Hey, it sounds like you're in a bit of a pickle. Before you think about reinstalling, try to gather more details about your installation. Did you set up Arch manually or use archinstall? The more info you can provide, the better help you'll get. It’s important for figuring out what might be going wrong here. Good luck!

I've been there! If you didn’t select a Desktop Environment during the installation, that could be why you're seeing a black screen after login. Just enter your username and password directly after the login prompt and check if something happens. Also, make sure you've installed everything you need for a proper GUI.

You might actually have a chance to learn something here! If your screen is going black after login, it could be a graphics driver issue or missing desktop environment setup. Have you installed a desktop environment or window manager? If you skipped that step, try logging in and see if you can start a DE manually. Otherwise, you might want to look into using archroot to repair your installation. It's a good learning opportunity!

Awesome that you managed to fix it! Sometimes just switching the desktop environment can make all the difference. Keep experimenting with Arch; it’s a great way to learn!

Glad to hear you had a successful installation otherwise! To avoid black screen issues, it's worth checking if you set up a proper DE like GNOME or KDE. If you went with something like i3 or Hyprland and it didn't work out, it might be a good idea to try a more mainstream environment.
