I'm curious about the experiences of freelancers and contractors who bill hourly. Specifically, I'm looking for insight on the following:
1. What is your hourly rate?
2. How many years of experience do you have and in what fields (corporate, FAANG, consulting, etc.)?
3. How many hours do you work on average each week?
4. What technology stacks do you typically use?
5. Where are you located?
6. As a bonus, do you think you could earn more elsewhere? Are you happier as a freelancer compared to a traditional job?
I'm wanting to gather a better understanding of how others navigate the contracting world, beyond just the average pay.

I typically charge around £600 per day in the UK, which is pretty standard here. I have 15 years of experience.
I work a bit on project-based tasks and aim for $300/hr in niches where that’s viable. It’s more about the value I provide than the time it takes—if I can do something in less time, it doesn’t mean I charge less because it would take the client longer.
I make between $65-105/hr depending on project complexity, with around 10 years of experience. I’ve worked between various agencies and started freelancing after building a solid client network. I average about 50 hours a week now and deal mostly with full-stack React apps and Shopify themes. I could get more with other jobs, but I enjoy the freedom of freelancing!
My hourly rate's $65, but I sometimes work on fixed-price projects. When I do that, it usually ends up being around $100-150/hr. I have about 6-7 years of contract experience, mainly working with educational institutions. I used to work around 15-25 hours a week while freelancing full-time. My main tech stack is .NET, but I also take on native apps and JavaScript frameworks. I live in Oregon, and after realizing the inconsistency in income, I transitioned to a more stable role. I think I'm happier now, but it’s hard to say!
Thanks for sharing! As I finish my full-stack program, can I reach out for advice as I enter the field?
What types of projects should I include in my portfolio to attract clients?
I usually take home between 20-30k per project, which lasts about 6-8 weeks, plus I get a $5k/month retainer for maintenance. I’ve been working for 10 years in a FAANG environment. I focus on project-based pricing rather than hourly because it yields better returns!
How do you find customers?
You've inspired me to start my own agency! How do you manage unlimited edits with so many clients?
I make $22.50/hr with 7 years of experience as a full-stack developer. My work is fully remote, so I can travel whenever I want. I usually only put in about 3 hours of work per day, which gives me plenty of time for my hobbies. Plus, I live in countries that don’t tax foreign income, so that helps a lot!
What tech stacks are you working with?
I typically charge $70-80/hr and have experience across various tech stacks. My work revolves around product companies and I try to maintain around 40 hours a week on a retainer basis. I’m based in Canada, but the salaries here max out around CAD $250k, which doesn’t really compete with offers in the US.
I recently started my own web dev agency, charging $90-150/hr. My goal is to net around $25k a month. I've got about 5 years of freelance experience and I usually work around 40-50 hours a week. My clients request a lot of Next.js and Supabase lately. I’m based in NYC but traveling now. I thrive without a boss and enjoy the challenges of scaling my agency!
I charge $150/hr and have 25-30 years of experience. Although I haven’t worked directly with FAANG, I've done consulting for Amazon. My work hours can vary greatly, from 20 to 100 hours a week depending on projects. I work with Laravel, Python, React, Go, AWS, Azure, and .NET, depending on what the project needs. I’m located in the US.
I charge $44/hr and have been self-employed for over 15 years, usually working about 20 hours a week. My main tech stack is PHP, particularly Laravel, and I'm based in the Midwest USA. But you know, I could probably make more elsewhere, I'm just really happy with my work-life balance!
I charge around €70, which is comparable to $140 in the US. I've got 20 years of experience, half of which were spent in corporate jobs, and the other half self-employed. I generally work 40-50 hours a week and spend a lot of time on my projects outside of billable hours. I could easily make more, but I enjoy my low-stress lifestyle here in the Netherlands.

Is that inside or outside IR35?
