Frustrated with Inconsistent Results from AI Coding Tools: Should I Give Up or Explore Alternatives?

I've been working with AI coding tools for some time now, but I'm really frustrated by how unpredictable the results can be. I can describe the same project twice and end up with completely different outcomes. Sometimes I get something brilliant, and other times it's just a complete disaster. I feel like I'm drawing a single card from a deck each time I run a project, which leaves me stuck with suboptimal outputs.

Recently, I tried using Atoms' race mode, which is somewhat similar to the concept of 'Best of N'. This mode runs multiple versions of the same project at once, allowing me to choose the best outcome. It seems to offer a consistent growth in results compared to my previous experiences, but it does come at a higher cost since running multiple models uses more credits. Honestly, if you have a budget under $100, I wouldn't recommend it. I feel like I've been wasting a lot of time and credits trying to chase that one good generation. Has anyone else had similar experiences or found better ways to handle multiple runs with these tools?

It sounds like you're questioning the effectiveness of AI tools since your results haven't matched your expectations. That's totally fair! Last year, I reassessed my approach and realized I wasn't pleased with the quality of my work either. I stopped relying on them too much and started brainstorming with chat; I write out my plans without auto-complete and only let the AI step in once I’ve fleshed out most of my thoughts. It made a big difference for me, so maybe you could try something similar?

AI is just a probability machine that generates text based on likelihood; it's not built to be consistent. Expecting it to behave like a human coder is a bit out of line. It can be a useful tool, but it’s not going to produce the results you want every time, so manage those expectations!

You could always just write the code yourself! Relying too much on AI for coding seems a bit silly at this point. Anyone claiming it's the future might just be trying to sell you something. But, hey, if AI isn't bringing you the results you expected, maybe it's time to reconsider how you're using it.

I totally get that vibe. Watching people rely on AI while I just code feels like a win for us old-school folks!

Honestly, Atoms' race mode sounds ridiculous! You're basically just throwing darts at a board and hoping one sticks. Why not just focus on creating a strong foundation first and then use the AI for specific parts?
