I'm in the market for a new motherboard since my current one, the Gigabyte B650M Gaming X AX, has been pretty unreliable with my Ryzen 5 7600X. I've usually gone for MSI motherboards in the past, but I recently upgraded to an RTX 4080 Aero and I'm now looking at options for my Ryzen 7 9800X3D. I'm particularly interested in either the Gigabyte X870 Aorus Elite X3D or the MSI MPG B850 Edge Ti. I want a motherboard that looks nice (preferably white or silver), but I'm also wary of software issues. I prefer a plug-and-play experience and want to avoid any complex BIOS setup. Both motherboards are the same price in my area, and I'm just trying to figure out which is the better choice.

If the prices are the same, I'd go for the X870 board—it’s got more features than the B850. But, I get it, MSI boards generally offer better reliability compared to Gigabyte. If you're worried about reliability with the 9800X3D, stick with what has fewer reported issues.
Ultimately, it boils down to whether you need additional I/O options or not. If you don’t, then the B850 is a solid pick. Just be sure to look closely at the features on both boards to see which one fits your needs better.
Thanks for this! I’m mostly leaning toward reliability right now, but the X870's tempting features are hard to ignore. It might be worth checking reviews again, especially since I've heard mixed results on various brands.
Performance-wise, both boards should perform similarly for your CPU. If you need more I/O options, definitely lean towards the X870. Otherwise, just see if the features on either board resonate with your needs because those shouldn't impact your performance much at all.
I totally get your focus on reliability. My Gigabyte board has been a pain, but I think the extra features of the X870 are really compelling. Tough choice, especially when you're hearing about deaths of the 9800X3D on some boards.
I've got the MSI MPG B850 Edge Ti, and I think it's been fantastic. If you don't need the extra features of the X870 chipset, it might be worth sticking with the B850. Just a heads-up though, MSI's software isn’t perfect either; I never liked it that much. Also, I've had my share of blue screens with Asus software on my last board, so I'm kinda wary about any additional software now. But for what it's worth, my MSI board has been reliable so far.
Yeah, I can relate to that! MSI Center has had its issues, and getting it set up right was a challenge. Sometimes it's slow, and updates can mess with functionality.
I’ve used MSI’s software too, and while it used to be better, it’s still not as reliable as it should be. My experience with Gigabyte’s software was pretty rough, leading to issues like POST failures. Definitely tough to decide.

I hear you! It does seem like Gigabyte has had more problems reported, especially with the 9800X3D. Reliability might just tip the scales in favor of MSI.
