I'm in a bit of a bind here. One of our users, who used to work with us and has recently returned, is unable to download any files from Teams or SharePoint. They keep getting hit with a permission error no matter what channel or file is involved. I've double-checked their permissions in SharePoint and everything seems fine since they can download files from OneDrive and the web without issue. Their previous account was deleted a long time ago before they came back, so I'm wondering if that has anything to do with this. I'm about to contact Microsoft for support, but thought I'd check here first to see if anyone has any insights or solutions. Any help would be appreciated!

Make sure you’re checking the user’s OneDrive settings as well. If files were previously shared with the old account, they might still be trying to access them with outdated permissions. You can use the special URL that changes the MembershipGroupId to '0' in SharePoint to quickly access and fix their profile there!
Yes! I fought with this recently - such a pain until I found that out.
It sounds like the issue is tied to the user’s old account being fully removed. SharePoint uses the account’s SID for permissions, so you'll need to go into SharePoint and delete the user from the access control list. If you can find the URL for managing those permissions, that should help you resolve it! Good luck!
Thanks for the tip! I’ll make sure to check that when I get in tomorrow. Any chance you could share that URL if you find it?
Yeah, that sounds tricky especially if the person has been a seasonal worker before. It can get messy!
If the user is a returning employee, it could also be an issue with different UPNs attached to the same identity. You might need to remove their permissions manually from every SharePoint site they had access to in the past. Check the permissions both in SharePoint and the individual user's OneDrive for any remnant of their previous account!
Was just about to say that! The mismatch between new and old accounts can really cause confusion.
Exactly what I did for a similar case. It resolved my permissions nightmare too.
Honestly, threads like this are exactly why I still frequent this place. Such practical insights! Definitely worth checking for the hidden user info list in SharePoint and removing the ghost account. You might want to look up guides on that too, they can save you a lot of time!
For sure! It’s amazing how much people here know about these issues.
Absolutely, there are always real gems of information here.
That’s exactly what I've had to do before. It’s a lifesaver!
