Help choosing between Intel Ultra 9 285K and Ryzen 7 9800X3D for my first PC build

I'm building my first PC and really need some advice. My main focus is on work, as I often juggle multiple browsers with dozens of tabs, run VMware, and use various productivity applications all at once. In the evenings, I want to unwind with some gaming, specifically titles like *Call of Duty* or *Battlefield*, and I'm aiming for a smooth experience, especially since I have a 240Hz monitor. I'm currently deciding between two configurations: one featuring the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K with an RTX 5080, and the other with the Ryzen 7 9800X3D paired with an RTX 5080. I've heard that the 9800X3D is superior for gaming, but I'm concerned it might struggle with multitasking and virtualization compared to the Ultra 9. I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts on which setup would better suit my needs for both productivity and gaming. Here's my build wish list for reference: [PCPartPicker List](https://pcpartpicker.com/list/N2F2h7).

It really depends on what you prioritize. If virtualization and multitasking are crucial for your work, the Intel Ultra 9 may serve you better due to its higher single-thread performance. However, for gaming, especially if you're into more CPU-heavy titles, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D could provide better frame rates. Just make sure to factor in your multitasking needs with VMware and those productivity tools you mentioned!

Yeah, I agree! If you plan on running a lot of VMs, Intel's higher clock speeds might help. But if you’re just gaming at night, the Ryzen’s gaming advantage might be worth it!

If you’re mainly working during the day, the 9800X3D is definitely the go-to for gaming in the evening. Maybe consider how much RAM you’re getting too, since that’ll help with running multiple tasks simultaneously. Both options are solid, but the 9800X3D is known for handling games like a champ!
