I'm looking to spend around $2,000 on upgrading my PC and building a gaming setup for my wife. She enjoys casual games like The Sims and Minecraft with mods, while I play more demanding and competitive games on a high refresh rate monitor. Currently, my setup includes a Ryzen 7 5800X, RX 580 8GB, and 16GB of RAM. A friend is offering me a Ryzen 9 5900 for $100, which I could use to upgrade my CPU and pass my 5800X to my wife. However, I've heard that the AM4 platform might be outdated and that investing in an AM5 build could be better. Should I go for the 5900 and then give her my current PC, or would it be wiser to simply upgrade my GPU to something like a 7900 XT or a 5060 Ti, swap in the 5900 to my current setup, and then give her my old components? I'm open to any suggestions!

While it’s tempting to upgrade, if your wife is mainly playing The Sims and Minecraft, your old PC will likely be more than enough for her. As for your build, the GPU choice is puzzling; you mentioned considered the 7900 XT and the 5060 Ti, which are in different tiers entirely. With a $2k budget, you could get a solid setup for yourself around $1k, maybe something like a 7800X3D with a 5070, and still create a decent budget build for her for around $600. Intel parts can also be quite affordable and efficient for budget builds, so they’re worth considering too!
Great point! Looks like I need to look into affordable options for her build too.
The Ryzen 5900 has twelve cores but might not perform best in gaming scenarios as efficiently as the 5800X because it has to manage across two CCXes. It can be a solid productivity CPU, but for gaming, I’d say stick with your 5800X. If you’re thinking about going AM5, that’s the way to go for your build and let your wife use the old setup as-is. It should suit her just fine!
Got it! Any suggestions for a budget-friendly CPU/GPU combo that still performs well?
Thanks for the clarification! I'll keep looking into the differences.
Honestly, there's not a substantial difference to justify the $100 for the 5900 over the 5800X. If you're considering going to the AM5 platform in the future, you might want to build a fresh system instead. I’d recommend focusing on building a new setup for yourself and just giving your wife your current PC as it should serve her casual gaming needs just fine.
What are some good CPU and GPU combos that fit within a budget?
Thanks for the advice! I'll look into building a fresh setup.

I appreciate the direct advice! You’ve helped clarify my thoughts a lot. I'll definitely do more research on the parts.
