Help! I Can’t Disable Stolen Device Protection Without Face ID

I've got an iPhone 14 that just updated to iOS 18.4.1, and now my Face ID won't work at all. This has been a problem after updates. To manage it, I used to turn off Stolen Device Protection (SDP) since it was always on 'away from familiar locations.' But after this latest update, I accidentally set the security delay to 'always' when I was trying to turn off SDP. The catch is I need to use Face ID to change it back, but my Face ID isn't working anymore! I can't even reset my phone because that also requires Face ID. I'm stuck and don't know what to do. Can anyone help?

It sounds like you really need to get your Face ID sorted out. If your phone is out of warranty, there might be a repair fee, but it’s necessary to fix the underlying issue first. Some people have had success with going to Apple support for diagnostics on the Face ID sensor and camera, just to see if there’s a fault there.

Remember, anything you can do with Face ID, you can do by entering your passcode too. Just a heads up, if you see a prompt for Face ID, wait a moment and it should give you the option to use your passcode instead.

Honestly, if Face ID has been a hassle, why toggle SDP all the time? Just keep it off! But if you're looking to factory reset your phone to fix Face ID, be careful. You’ll need your Apple ID password to set it up again afterward. Maybe log into iCloud.com first to make sure your password works. After resetting, consider not setting up Face ID at all if it’s giving you trouble.
