Help! I Need a Screw for My New NVMe SSD Installation

Asked By TechieTomboy93 On

I recently bought a WD_Black NVMe SSD to replace my old SSD that failed. However, I was surprised to find that it didn't come with the necessary screw to secure it in place. I'm looking for advice on where to find the right screw. Just to clarify, my motherboard is a Tuf Gaming X570 Plus, and I've shared some pictures of the screw hole [here](https://imgur.com/a/fZC45Dy). Any help would be much appreciated!

Some motherboards actually use swivel tabs to hold the SSDs in place without needing screws. It would be great if more did that! But if yours has the heatsinks, you'll need the screws for those.

For sure; those swivel things can be a pain! I like the straightforward security of a good old screw.

That's true! I prefer screws too, as they tend to be more secure. But yeah, having removable heatsinks is a nice feature.

If you can’t find the box with your spare parts, you could try borrowing a screw from an old laptop. Sometimes they match perfectly!

Great idea! I might actually have an old laptop lying around that I could check.

You can always Google about M.2 screws. They usually are a standard size and can be found at almost any major online retailer. It’s likely that you need a 3mm screw, so keep that in mind when shopping!

Typically, the screw doesn’t come with the SSD itself; it’s usually included with your motherboard. You can easily purchase M.2 screws online, like on Amazon. Just look for a standard M3 screw with a maximum head diameter of around 5.60mm, and you should be good to go!

Thanks! I noticed the SSD documentation specifically mentions the M3 size, so I guess I’ve been focused on the right one after all!

Yeah, my Samsung SSD came with screws, but not all manufacturers do! It's always good to double-check.

What you're looking for is an M.2 standoff and screw set. These are usually included in the retail box of your motherboard. If you can’t find them there, they are very common on Amazon. Just search for an M.2 standoff set, and pick one that fits your motherboard. Just a heads-up: MSI and Gigabyte screws might not fit your board, so make sure to check compatibility!

Thanks for the info! Though, I noticed some listings say they’re more expensive than expected, at least around $7 or so.
