Help! I Spilled Beer on My PC – What Should I Do?

While gaming late at night, I accidentally spilled beer on my PC, which includes a RX 7800 XT graphics card. After the spill, I quickly turned off the power, unplugged everything, and wiped the outside down. I removed the GPU and tried to clean it along with the rest of the components, but I noticed dried beer drops everywhere. I'm worried about potential damage, especially to the GPU. I'm using isopropyl alcohol for cleaning, but I'm unsure how far to go with disassembling the internals, since some screws are too tight and the CPU cooler is stuck. Could someone offer advice on how to properly clean my PC and what precautions I should take?

Use at least 99% isopropyl alcohol to clean everything up. Just make sure not to use those regular cotton balls, as they can leave fibers behind. Instead, get some cotton-tipped swabs for better precision. If you're unsure about the isopropyl percentage, just double-check your bottle. The higher the percentage, the better for this situation! Let everything dry completely before trying to power it up again.

Thanks for the tip! I didn’t know about different types of Q-tips. I’ll look for those! I have some isopropyl alcohol but I’m unsure of the exact strength.

Great advice, thanks! Just be careful when cleaning your GPU, that’s the most expensive part!

First off, you need to clean that dried beer off with rubbing alcohol, preferably using a soft bristle toothbrush for any stubborn spots. Cotton swabs might leave debris that could hurt small components. Make sure to disassemble as much as you can to check for any liquid under heatsinks or in connectors. Once cleaned, let everything dry out in a warm spot with a fan for at least 24 hours before putting it back together. If the spill was significant, you might have to prepare for some components to potentially fail, especially if liquid got into the CPU or memory slots.

This is a solid suggestion! How often do you keep your drinks away from your PC?

Definitely follow this advice! I had a similar spill before and it turned out okay, but I was diligent with the cleaning.

It’s good that you turned everything off right away! You might want to seek professional help if you're not confident cleaning everything yourself. Removing certain parts can be tricky, and a tech service can ensure a proper clean without damaging anything further. Your RX 7800 XT is valuable, and a small spill can sometimes lead to serious issues later if not handled well. Good luck, and fingers crossed for your setup!

I appreciate all the support! I think I might take it to a tech service to be safe.

You're smart to consider a pro! Better safe than sorry, especially with expensive parts.
